Backstory: Many years ago, I lived for a year on Whidbey Island in Washington State. My little dog weighed about eight pounds, and every night before bed, Id let her out onto the back lawn — forty feet of open grass that met the edge of a dense forest. It became our quiet routine. One evening, I noticed an owl perched at the tree line, watching us. I could hardly believe how close it was. When our eyes met, it felt like a silent understanding passed between us. The next night, just before I opened the door for my dog, the owl landed in the same tree, waiting. Clearly, it was no coincidence. We met eyes again — both of us aware of the others intentions. Mine was to protect my tiny dog; the owls, perhaps, to see if I would. This continued for several weeks. I began to expect the owl, even look for it, and came to appreciate its company in that strange, unspoken way that only nature allows. And then, one night, it was gone. Still, I think of that owl often — a quiet reminder of awareness, patience, and respect for the wild.
