Born from the idea of What would a UNIMATIC watch from the 1950s look like today, the U1-ML6 began as a conversation between the two companies on how to create a high-quality wristwatch that felt modern and incorporated vintage touchpoints, while not relying on nostalgia alone. Housed inside the 41.5mm stainless steel case of the U1-ML6 is the automatic caliber Seiko NH35A 21600bph, with a power reserve of 41 hours. The watch features a classic black bezel with a red triangle, reminiscent of the Rolex 6538, made famous by Sean Connery as James Bond in Goldfinger. The 15-minute marker on the bezel is the first time that UNIMATIC has featured it on one of its watches. Turning the 120-click unidirectional bezel is both an audible and tactile treat; the bezel hangs slightly over the diameter of the watch, making it easier to turn as well. Turning the watch over, the viewer is treated to a detailed engraving of the Greek god, Poseidon. Aside from the reference to the god of the sea, the engraving pays tribute to World War II veteran Alastair Robertson, an officer in the British Royal Navy. Before his retirement, he served as the navigator for the aircraft carrier HMS Ocean, the ships crest was that of Poseidon.
Who this watch is really for
strong dataBest for
- Collectors comparing independent dive or sport watches with about 300m of water resistance.
- Smaller wrists or buyers who prefer compact proportions over oversized wrist presence.
- Collectors looking for a cleaner, dress-leaning independent watch rather than another pure sports watch.
Skip if
- You want a larger modern sports-watch footprint.
- You want quartz convenience with minimal setting, winding, or service concerns.
Value note: The value case is helped by a familiar Swiss-style movement platform at the mid-range enthusiast level. The rest comes down to finishing, fit, and whether the design feels distinct enough.
