Rallying in Kenya started in 1953 with the first East African Coronation Safari. The event was established to celebrate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II and initially ran across Kenya, Uganda, and Tanganyika (now Tanzania). The event quickly gained a reputation as one of the toughest motorsport competitions in the world due to its immense length (thousands of kilometers on open roads), challenging terrain, and unpredictable weather conditions.
