A KEYSTONE SPECIES Sea otters are a keystone species, playing a vital role in the health of our coastal ecosystems. By feeding on sea urchins and other invertebrates, they protect the kelp forests that provide food and shelter for countless marine animals. Once hunted nearly to extinction for their luxurious fur, their populations dropped to only a few thousand worldwide. Thanks to conservation efforts and reintroduction programs, sea otters have made a remarkable recovery, though they remain endangered today. This timepiece celebrates their story and their beauty. Every glance at the otter on your wrist is a reminder of the balance they help maintain in the ocean, and of the importance of protecting the natural world we all depend on. Process and Materials This sea otter timepiece is a carefully crafted composition of fourteen pieces of abalone shell and Mother of Pearl. The background shimmers in aqua-tinted Mother of Pearl, while the otter comes to life through a mix of richly colored shells: pink heart abalone for the arms and hands, brown abalone for the clam on its stomach, tortoise shell abalone for the head, and a blend of brown Mother of Pearl, paua abalone, and black-lip abalone for the body. Available in 35mm or 38mm Band sizes: 16mm or 20mm Swiss Quartz
